Quick decision guide
Choose QuickBooks Spreadsheet Sync if you work exclusively in Microsoft Excel and need a tool to sync data to and from QuickBooks, or if you already use QuickBooks Online Advanced.
Choose Runbook if you use Google Sheets and need to build custom reports, analyses, or forecasts. It has the same core QuickBooks-to-spreadsheet sync, plus AI that builds and explains reports for you — including reports that you can’t make in QuickBooks.

Can you use Spreadsheet Sync in your current QuickBooks plan?
Before comparing features, check whether Spreadsheet Sync is even available to you. It requires QuickBooks Online Advanced, QuickBooks Online Accountant, or Intuit Enterprise Suite. It also requires Excel on Microsoft 365 (older Excel versions don’t support it).
That rules it out for a large share of the market. If you (or your clients) are on Simple Start, Essentials, or Plus, Spreadsheet Sync isn’t an option. QuickBooks Online Advanced costs $340 per month (as of September 2026), so depending on your current plan, the cost increase can be substantial. This is particularly true for firms serving multiple clients, since that price increase applies per client.
Runbook connects to any QuickBooks Online subscription, so you don’t need to upgrade.
Does QuickBooks Spreadsheet Sync work with Google Sheets?
Short answer: not unless you’re on Intuit Enterprise Suite. QuickBooks Online Advanced and QuickBooks Online Accountant are exclusively compatible with Excel. Only Intuit Enterprise Suite works with both Excel and Google Sheets.
It’s a bit confusing because “Spreadsheet Sync” sounds spreadsheet-agnostic, but in reality it’s an Excel add-in.
Intuit Enterprise Suite is a separate, mid-market product several steps above Advanced in both scope and price, sold on a quoted basis rather than a publicly listed price. If you’re a bookkeeping firm, a fractional CFO, or a small business on Simple Start, Essentials, Plus, or even Advanced, it’s not a realistic path to getting your QuickBooks data into Google Sheets.
What to use instead: If you want to sync QuickBooks data to Google Sheets, and don’t want to resort to manual CSV uploads, you can use a third-party add-on that connects QuickBooks Online directly to Google Sheets.
Runbook live-syncs QuickBooks data to Google Sheets, so you can pull reports and keep them updated with fresh data automatically. Unlike other spreadsheet sync tools, it lets you build any custom report from your QuickBooks data, including reports that aren’t available with QuickBooks’ standard reporting features. You just describe the report or analysis you want in plain English, and Runbook builds it for you in Google Sheets.
Where Spreadsheet Sync wins: writing back to QuickBooks
Spreadsheet Sync has a bi-directional sync with QuickBooks, which means you can also push data from a spreadsheet to QuickBooks. From Excel you can create, edit, or archive journal entries, purchase orders, bank transactions, timesheets, charts of accounts, contacts, items, bills, and invoices in bulk.
Runbook has read-only access to QuickBooks. This means you can use it for reporting and analysis and never have to worry about it editing your books in any way.
If you need to push data to QuickBooks in bulk, Spreadsheet Sync is a solid choice.
Where Runbook wins: reporting and analysis
Most teams that use spreadsheets for reporting do so because they need the flexibility to build custom reports and analyses.
Spreadsheet Sync only pulls standard reports that you can build in QuickBooks, so any custom reporting needs to be built and maintained in your spreadsheet.
Runbook is built to automate reporting and analysis end-to-end:
- AI agent in Google Sheets. Describe the report or analysis you want in plain English, and Runbook builds it in your spreadsheet. More on this below.
- AI variance analysis. Pull a P&L or balance sheet comparing two periods, and Runbook explains what’s causing every variance that exceeds your materiality threshold.
- Drill-down. Select one or more cells in a report, and easily drill down to see the underlying transaction detail.
Custom QuickBooks reporting in spreadsheets
As mentioned above, Spreadsheet Sync can only sync reports that can be built in QuickBooks’ native reporting UI. So if you want to see a specific cut of data or a custom metric, you’ll need to stitch it together manually.
Runbook represents your QuickBooks data in a way that’s easy to query, and easy for AI to understand. This lets you build truly custom reports: just describe what you want, and Runbook’s AI will query the exact data you need. You can ask for things like:
- A dashboard showing profitability and cash KPIs with commentary explaining key trends
- A single report with all estimated vs. actual costs and income across projects
- A 13-week cash flow forecast based on historical trends and taking into account open AR/AP
- A review of last month’s GL highlighting any potential duplicate or miscategorized transactions
Runbook syncs the QuickBooks data it needs and builds formula-driven reports that reference the live data, so reports stay refreshed automatically.
Refreshing reports without breaking your work
When you sync a QuickBooks report to your spreadsheet, you probably want to be able to add rows and columns for things like custom metrics, notes, or account re-mappings.
When you refresh a report with Spreadsheet Sync, it overwrites your previous formatting with the new report, so any customizations you made are destroyed.
Runbook refreshes reports without overwriting your custom formatting, formulas, or newly added rows. You can customize reports once and keep them refreshed automatically.
Customer support
Spreadsheet Sync is one feature inside a very large product, so support is handled through QuickBooks’ general support channels. At QuickBooks’ scale, it’s hard to give all those customers the support they need.
Runbook is a small but mighty team, and we prefer to work closely with customers to solve their problems. You get same-day support and direct access to the founders.
